Google has now announced its expansion of Google TV ads to DircTV signs, the rival satellite TV network controlled by News Corp. For the past two years, they have been in partnership with Dish satellite TV network. Google TV Ads previously had a hard time getting along with other cable companies since Dish satellite TV network was the only network that allowed Google to put its Tracking Software. on its set-top boxes.
30 million homes
It now looks like DirecTV has also agreed to setting up Google’s tracking software and has no worries of handing over data to the internet Giant. Whether has been a win for DirecTV, it has certainly been for Google as it now has access to 30 million homes. DIRECTV is the largest satellite provider in the U.S. and the second largest television distributor by household reach. Other than these two, a handful of cable channels are also partners such as the History International, Hallmark, Hallmark Movie, Bloomberg, and the Tennis Channel.

(Saudi Arabia announces ban) It started with United Arab Emirates announcing a ban over all the internet services (which is still due in October) and Saudi Arabia following suite by placing a nation wide ban on the IM. The ban did come into effect this Friday, but whether the ban was fully implemented or not, it is yet to be confirmed. There have been mixed reports of people still having access to the IM services. But it seems now it is all over as a deal has almost been finalized between RIM and Saudi Telecom Operators.

The two Gulf States have recently announced the bans over certain services provided by BlackBerry. United Arab Emirates was the first one announce its ban, although it won’t come in effect until later in October. Saudi Arabia however has decided to take a much grimmer stand and announced it ban over the BlackBerry’s IM service. It is probably one of the most used feature in BlackBerry at the moment among young people.

RIM under fire
Saudi Arabia Telecom watchdog, Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), said the ban would last until state’s three mobile phone operators “fulfil the regulatory requirements it has requested”. The requirements however were not revealed to the general public. This is not the first time BlackBerry’s maker RIM (Research in Motion) has come under fire by governments. India has also raised its concern over RIM’s Data Encryption of its internet service, which makes it impossible for the governments to monitor.
Privacy Concerns
RIM currently encrypts the data and routes it overseas, making it impossible for the governments to monitor. There are fears that such feature could be exploited by the criminals/terrorists.
Meanwhile Blackberry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has responded to a report in India’s Economic Times reported saying the firm will allow Indian security authorities to monitor Blackberry services. Continue Reading ->
