Is Microsoft launching a new social network as well?

We have recently seen Google take on Facebook with their social network called Google+. It seems now that Microsoft is also in works to launch a new social network. According to Fusible.com, Microsoft was caught in act testing out their new social network. A teaser landing page was found on socl.com (which has now been removed). Here is a screen shot of the page before it was taken down.

“With Tulalip you can Find what you need and Share what you know easier than ever”, reads a message on the home page. You’ll also be able to sign in using your Facebook or Twitter account. The name given to this social service by Microsoft is “Tulalip”.

Currently if you go on to socl.com, you will get the following message;

Thanks for stopping by.

Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web.

Twitter “Jump to someone you follow” hidden feature

I have been on Twitter for a long time and it was just this morning when I discovered this little feature. I do not know when it came out, never ever have I heard someone mentioning it. In any case, here it is.

It is a button that randomly jumps to someone you follow. It is located on the top right of the module. Please note that this button is not available on every page. It is only present on the page that lists your followers.

Lulz Security Takes Down Terrorist Website

Hacker crew of the SS Lulz is claiming responsibility for AlJahad.com’s temporay takedown. I repeat, The Islamist extremism site is down.

The site has already been nuked by rival hacker The Jester in March, prompting Lulz Sec to boast of their coup: “ujelly?”

It is good that lulzsec have finally taken a break from all the personal Sony havoc and finally started concentrating on something that really matters.

Some amazing guitar melody on Google Guitar Doodle

A while ago Google launched a play-along doodle to mark the anniversary of electric guitar inventor Les Paul’s birth. The doodle allowed you to run your mouse cursor over the strings to hear authentic Les Paul strumming. It was one of the many Google Doodles that have been coming on since the burning man in 1998. Here is the link to access all the previous doodle in case you want to check them out.

Versions of the Doodle included a record button, and invited people to share their tunes via a unique URL. Here are some of them which you might want to give a listen to. They are by the youtube user bassistuk.

Streamago – Broadcast yourself online

You all know me, I do not usually do video blogs but recently one of my projects has got me heavily involved (Tech Video Pod casts). So far all the sites that I have given a go have been too professional to set up or complicated. Also they lacked mobile streaming, some thing that is really useful during Tech Shows. But for the past couple of days I have been giving this Live Video Broadcasting site a trial run and I must say I pretty impressed thus a review.

Streamago – Live Broadcasting

Streamago is a new free interactive live broadcasting powered by the guys at Tiscali. It is a pretty nifty project of theirs and I can certainly see it going places. All you need is a PC and a webcam, no program installation or anything (provided you are using a pretty decent internet browser). Sign up via Facebook and with a quick verification email, you will be up and online in less than 2 minutes. You will have to create your own channel for which you will get a hyper link to share with your friends. There is even a chat box on the channel for people who want to communicate with you live. But this is not the feature that appealed to me the most, it was the iPhone app that they have that lets your stream while on the move. It is a pretty decent app and works quite well, depending on how strong your internet connection is. I was able to transmit through mine in a decent quality. What about those people who missed your broadcast? Do not worry as you can record your broadcast and store it online. Streamago offers free 10 gigs worth of space for you to record and store your broadcast for later viewing.

Streamago is not just a simple application that lets you broadcast online, it also boasts a community of live video makers. People host their own shows which they can easily broadcast on your Facebook Profile (and Page) via their Facebook app, although it would be of a great advantage that they let you embed your channel on your blog as well. But then not many people manage a blog so it would not affect large number of people.

Is it a good site to check out ?

Definitely it is. Whether you are looking to streaming to your friends or broadcasting a live tv show, this online application is the perfect solution. You can broadcast on the move, while travelling. Video conferencing is usually with one person only and current all major video conference companies charge to group video call. In a summary, here are the pros and cons;

Broadcasting recording for later view. 10 gb worth of online storage space
Chat box to communicate with your audience

Cons

Can not embed on your site

I am pretty sure they will be getting that functionality. Apart from that, the site has all the basics needed for one to broadcast itself online. Give it a go and you won’t be disappointed.
