Recently i was browsing Facebook when i came across this. I thought it was some kind of a joke but then i realized, why would some one like Facebook ever make a joke such as this. ( i think i was pretty much still wacked up from last night from even thinking that it might be a joke.)

Anyhow i clicked on the advert, as you can see below.

Clicking on it, led me straight to folkdirect.com

Here you can that it not only is a facebook rival, it has actually taken great measures to make it look exactly like facebook.

And for a kicker, it states its features as reasons to join.

folkdirect is a secure social site with walls, groups, chat, blogs, online gaming and robust privacy controls that you control. Your details will not be used for advertising and there are no 3rd party apps phishing your data. Join and use for free now!

Now that is pretty good way to advertise your site. Not only are you offering such features, which have been deeply criticized by the public for their rival, but also advertise itself on them.

I found it pretty funny. What do you think ?

Leave your comments below and do not forget to share

If you don’t have an extra machine or are an early adopter who wants to test out Vail, creating a VM is a good choice. To complete our series of installing WHS “Vail” Beta virtually, we look at installing it on Oracle’s VirtualBox.

Note: You will need to install VirtualBox on a 64-bit Windows System that supports hardware virtualization. We’ve read some articles that you can install it on a system without Hardware Virtualization, but haven’t been able to confirm that. For best results make sure the Host computer supports Hardware Virtualization.

To check if you’re system is capable of Hardware Virtualization you can use either SecurAble or the MS Virtualization Detection Tool…both are free and easy to use utilities.

Download and Install VirtualBox

If you don’t already have the latest version of VirtualBox installed on your PC, go to the VirtualBox site and download it (link below). Installation is straight-forward choosing the defaults. During the installation select Yes to the warning about Network Interfaces.

You’ll be prompted to approve the install of the device software, click Install.

Setup Your New VM

Now that we have VirtualBox installed it’s time to create our VM for Vail. From the main interface click on New to begin the New Machine Wizard.

When you come to the screen to pick the OS type, select Windows 2008 (64-bit) and give your machine a name.

Select the amount of memory you want to use. The minimum is 1GB but here we’re bumping it up to 2GB.

Now we need to create a new Virtual Hard Disk…

You can select Fixed size or Dynamically expanding storage. We chose Dynamically expanding storage versus Fixed, as the minimum requirement is 160GB and creating it as Fixed storage takes quite a while. We actually tried it both ways and they worked equally.

Again you can create a Fixed size hard drive if you want, but it can take quite a while, and can slow down other running tasks you’re using while waiting for it to complete.

Select the size of your disk where the minimum is 160GB. Since we picked Dynamically Expanding storage, it won’t take up the full 160GB on the disk.

Review your new machine summary and click on Finish.

VirtualBox Hardware Settings

Now that the machine is ready to go, we need to make a few adjustments to the hardware settings for the VM.

We adjusted the Display and maxed the video memory and you can enable 2D/3D Acceleration if you want, but there is no benefit from it. It’s a server and not meant to be fancy.

The Network settings are probably the most important as they are in the VMware installs. Check Enable Network Adapter and change it to Bridged Adapter. This will make the Vail VM appear as a separate machine on your network.

Under Storage for the CD/DVD Device browse to your VailInstallDVD.iso image.

Also, make sure to move the CD/DVD-ROM up to first in the Boot Order.

Now startup your new Vail VM and go through the Vail Installation Process.

Install Guest Additions

After the Vail installation process is complete, we need to install Guest Additions to make the VM experience more fluid. Click on Devices \ Install Guest Additions.

When AutoPlay starts in the VM select Run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe.

Then navigate through the VirtualBox Guest Additions Setup Wizard.

After working through the Guest Additions Install Wizard, a reboot of your Vail VM will be required.

When it comes back from reboot, at the CTRL+ALT+DEL logon screen go to Machine \ Insert Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Now you can log into Vail.

That is all there is to it! You can now start using your Virtual Vail machine in VirtualBox.

Conclusion

While we had no problem installing Vail on VirtualBox, but it didn’t run as smoothly as it did on VMware products in our tests. However, if you’re a fan of VirtualBox and want to try out Windows Home Server Beta “Vail” without the need for another machine, this will do the trick. No matter if you want to use VMware Player, VMware Server, or VirtualBox…they’re all free and the Vail Beta is free right now too.

Using Windows 7 Taskbar Color Changer

There’s really not very much to using the application—simply download it, extract it into a folder somewhere, and then launch it. You can choose a color or use the Random button, and then click the Apply button to change the taskbar color.

The color picker is a standard one, and you can choose any color you want.

Here’s a green taskbar!

Just in case you are worried, the application makes a copy of your wallpaper and puts it into a separate folder. The original wallpaper image is untouched and you can switch back to it anytime.

Reverting Your Taskbar Back to Normal

You can quickly revert your taskbar back to normal by just selecting the original wallpaper and setting it as your desktop background again. Which you could also do in Control Panel, or wherever you prefer to set it.

Rotating Between Taskbar Colors

What Grant might not have anticipated is that since the application stores a copy of each color that you try out, you can open up the Desktop Background panel in Control Panel and select most or all of the different wallpaper copies—each with a separate color that you previously chose.

Then Windows 7 will automatically let you shuffle between all of the wallpaper images on a regular basis, which will actually end up just changing the taskbar color, since it’s the same wallpaper.

It’s a rather interesting feature.

Watch a Video of it in Action

If you’re the type that would rather see it working before you try it out, here’s a short video showing off just how quickly it actually works. There’s no sound, so you don’t need to bother adjusting your speakers.

Download Windows 7 Taskbar Color Changer

You can grab your own copy of the application from Grant’s web page, or we’ve also provided a mirror copy just in case his web server can’t handle the load, but you can check out his other utilities as well on his site.

Note: If you really like the software, you could consider donating a few dollars to Grant via the Paypal links on his Home Page

Do you want to easily stream videos from your PC to your apple device ? Here is a way to do so through Air Video.

There is a free version as well as a paid version for just $2.99, which frankly is not a lot considering what you can do with it. In the free version you are limited to viewing certain number of folders or so.

It will convert video formats that can’t be played on your device to an iPhone friendly format. It can convert the more widely used containers like mp4, MOV, AVI, MPEG, DIVX, FLV…etc. Keep in mind that DRM protected videos and Propriety codecs are not supported.

Install Air Video Server

The first thing we need to do is download and install the free Air Video Server software to your computer (link below). Install as normal accepting the defaults.

When the server launches, under the Shared Folders tab click on Add Disk Folder…

Then browse to the location of the videos you want to stream.

You can add as many locations as you want. Notice here we added a shared folder from our Windows Home Server too…more on that below.

Another interesting thing you can do if you’re running iTunes is add an iTunes Playlist.

Then select from your Playlists what you want to add.

Then it will be added to the shared locations too.

Install Air Video Free

Now download and install the Air Video Free or Full App (link below) on your Apple device, either through iTunes…

Or directly from the App Store on your device.

Using Air Video

Here we take a look at the free version running on an iPod Touch. Once installed, click on the Air Video Free icon on your main menu.

Next click the “+” button to look for the Server(s) you have running.

On the Select Server screen pick the computer we just installed the server on.

Now select one of the folders you added to the Shared Folders tab on the Air Video Server.

The free version won’t display all the folders at once. However, we found if we kept refreshing the view we would eventually get to the folder we wanted.

If you click to display more items, you’ll be prompted to get the full version.

Click Yes and you’ll be taken to the App Store to purchase the full version which is only $2.99…not a bad price for such an awesome app!

Here is an example of the full version which shows all of your folders at once.

Stream & Convert Video

After you select the video you want to watch, the true awesomeness of this app is revealed. Tap on Play with Live Conversion, and you can watch the video while it’s being converted to an iPod friendly format. Very Cool!

It only takes a moment for your video to start. You will be able to watch it while it’s converting in the background and have basic video player controls.

Once you have the volume and screen size setup, tap on the screen again to hide the controls.

You can also select to just convert videos while you do something else. The videos will be added to a Queue and converted one at a time. While the videos are converting, you can view the Queue on your device.

Then go back to your folders and find other videos to convert.

If you’re converting several videos, you’ll get a message letting you know it has been added to the Conversion Queue.

You’ll be able to check out your Queue and see the progress of what’s converting.

You can also see what is converting from the Air Video Server under the Conversions tab.

Enable Remote Access

So far we’ve looked at streaming content over a Wi-Fi network. But you can also stream it over an Internet Connection including 3G which is great for iPhone and iPad users. The first thing we need to do is make sure to do before enabling Remote Access is make the Air Port Server secure. Click on Settings then check Require Password and set a strong password for it.

On the Air Video Server select the Remote tab and check Enable Access from Internet (beta). Then Check Automatically Map Port (requires a router with UPnP or NAT-PMP support). Then Test Connection. Make sure to take note of the Server PIN as you’ll need it when connecting your Device.

Provided you have the capabilities in your router, you should see a successful Connection Test. If the test fails, you might have to do some troubleshooting on your router, manually configure it’s settings, try flashing it with dd-wrt, or just buy a capable one.

Now on your Apple device, launch Air Video and when the Servers screen comes up click on the “+” button to get to the Select Server screen. This time select Enter Server PIN.

Since we password protected the server, we’ll need to enter that in first.

Then type in the server PIN that we took note of earlier and tap Save.

Now you will see the Server which you’re accessing online and will show the Server PIN under it.

Then continue to use it as you would on a local Wi-Fi network.

Supports Windows Home Server Shares

One cool thing we found is this will work with network folders from Windows Home Server. We have seen other methods where people install Air Video directly on WHS, but accessing the shared folders might be your best bet. Installing 3rd party software on WHS is not necessarily supported and the software may not be configured for its architecture. It might be nice to see an Add-In for WHS for Air Video though.

We had no noticeable slow downs while selecting Play with Live Conversion with videos from the Server on our Wi-Fi connection.

Air Video on iPad

As we mentioned before it can run on the iPad as well. Here are a couple shots of it running on that device.

Since there’s obviously more room on an iPad screen, you can navigate through your folders more easily. Especially with the full version as it shows more folders at once.

Conclusion

While there are other apps that will let you stream multimedia content to your Apple device, we had the best experience with either the Free or Full version of Air Video. If you’re looking for what is probably the easiest way to stream video to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch Air Video is definitely the way to go. You can always start with the free version, and if you like it, get the full version for a few bucks and have easier access to all of your video folders.

You are no doubt reading this article because you have a new phone Android brilliant, but there’s just one problem: you’re so addicted that the battery is running out on a daily basis. Instead of putting the phone down, we will maximize the battery life.

Saving the life of the battery is not rocket science, the general principle is to get rid of what is draining the battery the most, and attitude to other things that you should use, but maybe you can change a little. Keep reading for the full explanation.

Use the built-in screen using the battery

There is a screen built into Android that most casual users probably do not even know, and can tell you exactly what is killing your battery. Head to Settings -> About Phone -> Using the battery to see what has been killing your battery life.

From this screen, you can usually see what apps are the worst offenders, and you will probably notice that the biggest problem—at least, the biggest one that we can fix—is actually the backlight on the phone. Personally I’d prefer to talk less to other humans, but that isn’t always an option!

Note: on my phone, I’ve already configured the backlight to not be very bright—normally that number would be a lot higher.

Adjust the Backlight to be Less Bright

Since we’ve already determined that the backlight is usually the biggest problem, you should probably adjust the settings. Head into Settings –> Display –> Brightness, where you can choose to automatically adjust, which usually works fairly well, or you can just turn the brightness down to the lowest acceptable level.

You should make sure that the screen timeout value is set to turn off quickly as well.

Disable Your Wi-Fi When You Don’t Need It

Wi-Fi can really speed up accessing data on your phone, but it can also be a big drain on the battery if you don’t need it enabled, especially when you are out and about… The phone will try and scan for a wireless network even though you may not want it to.

To enable Airplane mode, you can head into Settings –> Wireless & networks–> Airplane mode.

You can easily toggle the Wi-Fi on or off with a widget or shortcut—there’s a built-in widget included in Android phones, or you can use the AnyCut or BetterCut utilities to create your own shortcuts to directly turn them on or off without requiring a widget.

Disable Bluetooth if You Don’t Use It

If you aren’t using a wireless headset, there’s no reason to have Bluetooth running all the time, and you should probably cut it off to save the battery life. If you never use it at all, head into Settings –> Wireless & networks–> Bluetooth.

You can also enable or disable the Bluetooth when you do need it, using the power widget.

Use the Power Widget to Easily Toggle GPS, Bluetooth, Wireless, and Screen Brightness

Android includes a built-in Power Widget that can easily toggle these settings on or off—just long press on the background of one of your screens, choose Widget –> Power Control to add it to the screen. You’ll notice in this example screenshot that I’ve got my GPS enabled but I’m not using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth at the moment—the icon all the way on the right lets you easily toggle the screen brightness settings.

This is probably the simplest and easiest thing that you can do to save your battery without having to dig into the settings all the time.

Disable Apps that Sync Constantly

The built-in Email application (not the Gmail one, which uses Push technology) can suck the battery badly, because it syncs on a too-regular basis, especially when you have lots of accounts—each one of them is set to sync every 15 minutes. You’d be better off setting it up to sync manually, but if you want it to sync automatically, you should set it to sync less frequently.

Open up the Email application, head to your account, and choose Account settings –> Email check frequency from the menu. Change this to something more like an hour… or never. You can always hit refresh manually when you want to read your email.

The same thing holds true for other accounts, like Twitter clients, which are even less important to update all the time. For Seesmic, you can head into Settings –> Background Updates from the main screen. For the official Twitter app, the settings are similar.

The Facebook application polls automatically in the background, and you can customize the refresh interval for that as well—if you don’t need Facebook updating all the time, you should set this value as high as possible.

From the main Facebook screen—the one with the icons—head into Settings –> Refresh interval from the menu.

Disable the GPS Location Features

One of the biggest battery sucking features on my droid is the GPS… When I have navigation going, the battery dies far too fast, so I end up having to keep it plugged in the whole time I am driving. This makes sense… but what you might not know is that a lot of other applications use the GPS as well.

You can also change the GPS to use wireless networks, and uncheck the option for Use GPS satellites—this will make the GPS a little less accurate, but it will save your battery. Note that you probably want the real GPS enabled if you’re using Google Maps Navigation.

Additionally, you should turn off the geolocation features in your Twitter client, weather application, or whatever other apps that you really don’t need them in. If you want to keep it enabled, that’s great, just realize that it does drain the battery, so uncheck this option to help.

Use a Task Manager to See What is Always Running

It is a wise decision to have a copy of Advanced Task Cleaner or a similar application installed on your phone to help you kill applications that don’t need to be running, but more so that you can see what exactly is launching itself repeatedly in the background. You can setup an auto-kill list for applications you don’t use that often—make them cut off when you shut off the screen, or after an interval.

Note: If you’ve configured your application settings to not pull down lots of data or do checking in the background, it’s not quite as important to keep tasks killed all the time—that’s really what kills your battery, not having them sitting idle.

You can also configure advanced task manager to show you CPU usage for each app, which is a more useful meter than memory usage when it comes to battery life.

Disable or Remove Applications That You Aren’t Using

Once you have identified the application that you don’t want running all the time, check in the settings to see if it can be removed from running in the background. Some applications will give you an option for notifications that can be turned off if you don’t need them, making the application not check in the background so often.

It should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway—you should remove the apps that you don’t need anymore, especially the ones that are draining your battery as determined from the android battery panel or task manager. Head into Settings –> Applications –> Manage Applications and then you can click the Uninstall button for an app.

Disable Home Screen Widgets You Don’t Need

If you’ve got loads of widgets that are pulling data from the web, that means they are likely pulling down data in the background all the time. You should try not to go overboard with these, or remove the ones you don’t actually need.

Disable Animated Wallpaper

Yeah, that sweet animated wallpaper doesn’t help your battery any. Get rid of it for a small extra battery savings.

Use APNDroid to Kill Your Entire Data Connection When You Don’t Need It

If you’re using a phone that’s on the AT&T or T-Mobile networks, you can use the APNDroid utility to kill your data connection entirely with a simple widget. It doesn’t work on Verizon phones in my testing. It’ll disable the data but still allow regular calls and SMS.

Keep the Battery from Getting Too Hot

One of the quickest ways to kill a battery is to leave it out in the sun—try and keep your phone somewhere that isn’t too hot whenever possible. You’ll end up needing to replace the battery a lot quicker if you don’t.

Additional Notes

There’s a number of other things you can do to extend your battery life a bit—one of which is to use a rooted phone and install the Autostarts utility, which you can use to keep applications from launching themselves automatically. Since this isn’t something you can do on a stock phone, we’re not covering how to do it here.

You can also use an application called Tasker to automate certain actions, like turning on or off the GPS or Wi-Fi when you launch a particular application, or scheduling a time of day to make sure that Wi-Fi is disabled. Lifehacker has a great guide to using Tasker to automate your phone, and they also explain how to use a configuration to scale back data usage at night.

Have any of these tips helped your Android phone’s battery life? What other tips do you have for your fellow readers?

Google has now announced its expansion of Google TV ads to DircTV signs, the rival satellite TV network controlled by News Corp. For the past two years, they have been in partnership with Dish satellite TV network. Google TV Ads previously had a hard time getting along with other cable companies since Dish satellite TV network was the only network that allowed Google to put its Tracking Software. on its set-top boxes.

30 million homes

It now looks like DirecTV has also agreed to setting up Google’s tracking software and has no worries of handing over data to the internet Giant. Whether has been a win for DirecTV, it has certainly been for Google as it now has access to 30 million homes. DIRECTV is the largest satellite provider in the U.S. and the second largest television distributor by household reach. Other than these two, a handful of cable channels are also partners such as the History International, Hallmark, Hallmark Movie, Bloomberg, and the Tennis Channel.

Cable Networks

We will now have to wait and look at the results. The satellite networks are generally faster to adopt newer technologies than the cable networks. The cable networks seem less likely to turn over the date to the internet giant still. Some of the cable operators are known to be experimenting with targeted ads. Either way, if targeted ads seem to pay off better, Google will soon be able to turn this side buisness into a full fledge one, provided it has the support of the cable networks sooner or later.
