Today we look at how to use Microsoft Security Essentials for the USB scanner via the AutoPlay dialog box.</p>
<p><em>If you have not already done so, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials</em></p>
<p><em><em> </em></em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><em><em><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/bf387_1mseatuoplay.png" border="0" alt="1mseatuoplay" width="494" height="389" /> </a></em></em></p>
<p><em><em>Next download the &#8220;mseautoplay.zip <em> / em&gt; (link below). Unzip the file to view its contents.<span id="more-931"></span><br />
</em></em></em></p>
<p><em><em><em><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "> </a><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/d942a_sshot20100524011722.png" border="0" alt="sshot-05.24.2010 - [01-17-22] " width=" 517 " height=" 452 " /> </a></em></p>
<p><em>Then move the file <em> msescan.vbs / script em&gt; in the Windows directory. </em></em></p>
<p><em><em><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "> </a><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/d942a_2mseautoplay.png" border="0" alt="2mseautoplay" width="517" height="452" /> </a></em></p>
<p><em>Next double-click the file mseautoplay.reg &#8230;</em></p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/d942a_3mseautoplay.png" border="0" alt="3mseautoplay" width="517" height="452" /> </a></p>
<p>Click Yes to the warning dialog asking you if you are sure you want to add to the registry.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/28934_4mseautoplay.png" border="0" alt="4mseautoplay" width="600" height="212" /> </a></p>
<p>After it is added, you receive a confirmation message &#8230; click OK.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/28934_5mseautoplay.png" border="0" alt="5mseautoplay" width="600" height="167" /> </a></p>
<p>Now when you insert a thumb drive when AutoPlay is in place, you have options for the first scan with MSE.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/28934_14autoplay.png" border="0" alt="14autoplay" width="362" height="508" /> </a></p>
<p>MSE begins analyzing the USB &#8230;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/b7185_sshot20100524194128.png" border="0" alt="sshot-05.24.2010 - [19-41-28] 'width = " height="454" /> </a></p>
<p>You can use it to scan all removable media. Here is an example of the ability to scan a DVD with MSE before opening the files.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/b7185_7mseautoplay.png" border="0" alt="7mseautoplay" width="362" height="320" /> </a></p>
<p>You can also go into the Control Panel and set it as a default option for automatic reading. Open the Control Panel, Display with large icons and click AutoPlay.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><strong><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/77cac_10autoplay.png" border="0" alt="10autoplay" width="365" height="368" /> </strong></a></p>
<p>Note that now when you change the default options for different types of media, Scanning with ESM is now included in the dropdown.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><strong><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/77cac_11autoplay.png" border="0" alt="11autoplay" width="636" height="527" /> </strong></a></p>
<p>delete settings</p>
<p><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "> </a>If you want to delete the MSE AutoPlay Handler, Ramesh has been kind enough to create a registry file discard. Double-click <em> Undo.reg from the original file AutoPlay MSE and click Yes to the message to delete the parameter. </em></p>
<p><strong><em><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "> </a><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/ddb99_12undo.png" border="0" alt="12undo" width="622" height="513" /> </a></em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em><span style="font-weight: normal;">Then you&#8217;ll need to go into the Windows directory and manually delete the file </span><em><span style="font-weight: normal;"> msescan.vbs / script em&gt;. </span></em></em></p>
<p><em><em><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "> </a><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><img src="http://www.houseoftech.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/ddb99_13undodelte.png" border="0" alt="13undodelte" width="503" height="398" /> </a></em></p>
<p><em><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-style: normal;">This is a great thing that you can scan your pen drives and other removable media of the AutoPlay dialog box. We tested it on XP, Vista and Windows 7 and it works perfectly on each.</span></span></em></p>
<p><em> </em></em></strong></em></em></em><a href="http://www.howtogeek. com / howto/4714/week-in-geek-the-microsoft-security-essentials-is-excellent-edition / "><span style="font-style: normal;">Download </span></a><a href="http://www.winhelponline.com/temp/mseautoplay.zip"><span style="font-style: normal;"> mseautoplay.zip </span></a></p>
