Internet has come under a lot of criticism over the past recent years. By the term ‘Internet under attack’, I am not referring to works by the Anonymous, although that is another quite an interesting topic, I am instead talking about how the media has been portraying internet as bad influence. There has a been a great surge in headlines such as “Twitter Argument Leads to Alleged Murder” and “Halloween Argument Leads Teens to Online Harassment.” in the past few years with the blame usually being laid upon the social networking websites such as Twitter and Facebook.

It seems as if the people have always looked for someone or something to blame for the incidents that take place. I clearly remember when some shootings were being blamed on Grand Theft Auto and Marilyn Monroe. Today it is the social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. I came across so many of them that i have decided to list some few headlines and mention a bit about them. As soon as you read them, you will realize how stupid most of them are.

“Twitter Argument Leads to Alleged Murder.” Two guys who had been friends once upon a time who turned against each other thanks to a girl they both were after and ended up in a confrontation which led to murder of one of them. The fight got escalated when they were talking to each other on twitter which later led to a physical showdown. The news paper blamed the twitter for this (no idea why).

Does it make sense ? Not really. Is Twitter to blame here ? Aapparently the people thought it was. Here is a quote from the mother “That’s not a reason to shoot somebody, that’s crazy. I don’t know what’s going on with that Twitter thing.”

Not saying that the loss of life that took place was ridiculous. Just the way the blame was being put on twitter. Why not blame mobile phones and cars as well since someone probably used to them to get in a fight and drive over.

“Halloween Argument Leads Teens to Online Harassment.” A small town somewhere in US with nothing to write to about, decided to report about a 14 male old male who ended up harassing a some girl online on MySpace. The confrontation apparently took place a day before in which heated words were exchanged as well as a push (which lead to the 14 year old being summoned to court). It continued on tomorrow online ( kids just can not give up now can they). The news media however decided to publish the story as an Online Harassment or “Cyber Bullying”, with later part of their story blaming the internet.

The end result being that apparently the internet makes people fly into irrational Violence.

“PS3 Online Dispute Leads to Real Life Beating.” Here two kids, living nearby who know each other, go to the same school and not to forget that they hate each other a lot already, got into a fight after an online gaming session on PS3. The fight could have taken anywhere else, a basketball game, school cafeteria, etc. but since it took place after the argument on PS3, the news media decided to lay the blame on online gaming as being too violent and leading to physical confrontations.

“Phoebe Prince, South Hadley High School’s ‘New Girl,’ Driven to Suicide by Teenage Cyber Bullies.” Here again, we are lead to believe that internet was the reason why the girl committed suicide. If you read up a bit, you will realize that much of the bullying actually took place in the school itself. It just extended on to the internet. Is it the internet’s fault ? The news made it pretty clear that it was. Once again, the internet comes under attack here.

There are so many examples, the internet news is littered with it. I could go and on about it, but i think i will stop here. What do you guys think ? Is it fair ? What is the general trend that goes on around the internet ?

This is because i have recently bought myself the new iPhone 4 and till now it has been a blast. Until i eneded up on some websites that reqired flash. And boy was that a pain..

I have always used Skyfire on my Nokia N82 to browse the internet. And was it amazing or what. Never needed to change my old Nokia phone just because i have Skyefire on it. Which was pretty good until the the small screen for the Nokia started to annoy me (thus the new phone). I had been one of the loyal customers, waiting patiently for the Skywire to launch and app for the iPhone. And when they did, boy did they dissapoint.

First of all they took their own sweet time to produce an app for the iPhone (how long has iPhone been out for now ?). I am pretty sure that if they had launched themselves earlier, they would have taken off quite well during the ”Apple pwns Adobe” Season. Still when they did finally launch their app, just after a few hours, they had to pull out because their servers could not cope with the stress.

When i mean few hours, i mean barely 6 hours of its being launched on iPhone App Store, downloaded and being used. Sadly i am one of those guys who didn’t get on the Apple App Store in time to download and check the app out.

What does this mean for Skywire ?

Frankly, Skywire has really brought me down. An app that could not survive for 6 hours on the App Store. Its not like they are some small time App Lab. They have been around for quite some time with their apps on other devices. I did get a occasional pinch on the Nokia Skywire Borwser, but not so bad or often to get noticable. The video steam worked flawlessly for me.

I really do hope that they get their servers back online. Although i will probably be not one of the first one to jump back on and buy the app once it goes online. I rather wait and see if they actually got some more servers online.

But somehow this was not through some program (open source, peer-to-peer softwares such as Tor are routinely used to evade the censors ) but through a E-Reader, Amazon Kindle. It seems that the Kindle routes it’s internet traffic through encrypted overseas servers, to which the Chinese Government has no access to. This has led to the Kindle being quite popular in the Chinese Grey Market ( place known to sell iPhones, Blackberrys and even iPad).

Upon reaearch, it was found that the Kindle 2 was on sale for 2,600 yuan (US$380) and the Kindle DX for 4,300 yuan ($630) at the Beijing bazaar. Apart from the bazaars, it is really easy to get hold of one online from Taobao.com, an auction site similar to eBay. A search result provides hundreds of Kindles for sale.

Why hasn’t it been caught yet ?

We do not know why the over protective Chinese government has not been able to clamp down on this issue. Maybe it is because it is not a issue yet. Kindle does not yet come with a Chinese language support ( Edit: a hack is available) and thus does not quit appeal to the majority of mandarin language followers. There are not many native books either we understand it would be quite a waste for someone to actually spend that much cash just to browse Internet. Internet browsing which will probably get banned once Chinese Government clamps down on it.

Till then, come on Chinese People, it’s time to check out how far twitter and Facebook had come along. Maybe hijack a few accounts and force some malware downloads ( Recently got hit by some malware originating from China).

Note: You will need to perform this process on each computer that you want to use.

What You’ll Need

Two computers running Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. The host, or home computer that you will be streaming the media from, cannot be on a public network or part of domain.

Windows Live ID

UPnP or Port Forwarding enabled on your home router

Media files added to your Windows Media Player library

Windows Live ID

Sign up online for a Windows Live ID if you do not already have one. See the link below for a link to Windows Live.

Configuring the Windows 7 Computers

Open Windows Media Player and go to the library section. Click on Stream and then “Allow Internet access to home media.”

The Internet Home Media Access pop up window will prompt you to link your Windows Live ID to a user account. Click “Link an online ID.”

If you haven’t already installed the Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant, you will be taken to Microsoft’s website and prompted to download it.

Once you have completed the Windows Live download assistant install, you will see Windows Live ID online provider appear in the “Link Online IDs” window. Click on “Link Online ID.”

Next, you’ll be prompted for a Windows Live ID and password. Enter your Windows Live ID and password and click “Sign In.”

A pop up window will notify you that you have successfully allowed Internet access to home media.

Now, you will have to repeat the exact same configuration on the 2nd Windows 7 computer. Once you have completed the same configuration on your 2nd computer, you might also need to configure your home router for port forwarding.

If your router supports UPnP, you may not need to manually forward any ports on your router. So, this would be a good time to test your connection. Go to a nearby hotspot, or perhaps a neighbor’s house, and test to see if you can stream your media. If not, you’ll need to manually forward the ports. You can always choose to forward the ports anyway, just in case.

Note: We tested on a Linksys WRT54GL router, which supports UPnP, and found we still needed to manually forward the ports.

Finding the ports to forward on the router

Open Windows Media Player and make sure you are in Library view. Click on “Stream” on the top menu, and select “Allow Internet access to home media.”

On the “Internet Home Media Access” window, click on “Diagnose connections.”

The “Internet Streaming Diagnostic Tool” will pop up. Click on “Port forwarding information” near the bottom.

On the “Port Forwarding Information” window you will find both the Internal and External Port numbers you will need to forward on your router. The Internal port number should always be 10245. The external number will be different depending on your computer. Microsoft also recommends forwarding port 443.

Configuring the Router

Next, you’ll need to configure Port Forwarding on your home router. We will show you the steps for a Linksys WRT54GL router, however, the steps for port forwarding will vary from router to router.

On the Linksys configuration page, click on the Administration Tab along the top, click the “Applications & Gaming Tab, and then the “Port Range Forward” tab below it.

Under “Application,” type in a name. It can be any name you choose. In both the “Start” and “End” boxes, type the port number. Enter the IP address of your home computer in the IP address column. Click the check box under “Enable.” Do this for both the internal and external port numbers and port 443. When finished, click the “Save Settings” button.

Note: It’s highly recommended that you configure your home computer with a static IP address

When you’re ready to play your media over the Internet, open up Windows Media Player and look for your host computer and username listed under “Other Libraries.” Click on it expand the list to see your media libraries. Choose a library and a file to play.

Now you can enjoy your streaming media over the Internet.

Conclusion

We found media streaming over the Internet to work fairly well. However, we did see a loss of quality with streaming video. Also, Recorded TV .wtv and dvr-ms files did not play at all.
